While drum brake hardware functions reliably in the harsh, dirty environment inside the brake drum for many thousands of miles; eventually heat and wear take their toll. Worn hardware, especially weak hold-down and return springs, won't keep the shoes in alignment on the backing plate and can cause brake drag and premature wear.
