Its very important to understand the engine components and their functions to ensure you select the best parts that your bucks can buy when gearing up for an engine build. There are many moving parts in a typical combustion engine. For example, starting with the short block, you have the engine block, the rotating assembly (consisting of the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons) as well as the piston rings, main and rod bearings, and rear main seal, oil pan and timing cover gasket. In addition, the camshaft, lifters, camshaft bearings, timing set , and balancer seal complete the bottom end. For the top end, the cylinder head consists of the intake and exhaust valves, valve springs, spring retainers, valve keepers, push rods, rocker arms, rocker arm studs, head, intake, valve cover, and exhaust gaskets. Depending on if the engine is carbureted or fuel injected, there are additional parts involved to complete the assembly. Don't forget the water pump, pulleys, brackets, harmonic damper, distributor, spark plugs, fuel pump, thermostat, water outlet, throttle linkage, and additional components to complete your installation.
