About TEIN FLEX Z Coilovers

The TEIN FLEX Z is a suspension option for MR2 owners who want more adjustment than a simple lowering kit provides. It allows you to change ride height and damping firmness separately, making it easier to set the car up around your preferred stance and driving conditions.

Each twin-tube damper provides 16 levels of damping adjustment. That means you can run a softer setting for everyday driving or increase damping firmness when you want a different suspension response, without changing the springs.

The full-length adjustable design also gives you more control over ride height. By adjusting the damper assembly length independently from spring preload, you can change the vehicle's stance while helping maintain usable suspension travel.

Designed for the Second-Generation Toyota MR2

Part VST04-C1SA4-C is listed for both the 2.0L SW20L and 2.2L SW21L MR2 configurations.

The kit uses 4 kgf/mm front springs and 8 kgf/mm rear springs, with different spring lengths and inside diameters for each end. Front camber-adjustable upper mounts offer additional alignment flexibility, while reinforced rubber rear mounts provide a less rigid mounting arrangement than pillowball mounts.

TEIN specifies the same recommended lowering measurements for both applications: approximately 1.6 inches in front and 1.8 inches in the rear.

For an older MR2 with worn suspension components, FLEX Z can provide a complete coilover replacement with adjustable height and damping, rather than relying on lowering springs alone.

Recommended Ride Height

Vehicle Application Front Rear
1990-1999 Toyota MR2 2.0L (SW20L) -1.6in (-40mm) -1.8in (-45mm)
1990-1999 Toyota MR2 2.2L (SW21L) -1.6in (-40mm) -1.8in (-45mm)

Recommended Ride Height Adjustment Range

Vehicle Application Front Rear
MR2 SW20L / SW21L -2.0in to -1.2in -2.2in to -1.4in

Maximum Ride Height Adjustment Range

Vehicle Application Front Rear
MR2 SW20L / SW21L -2.8in to -0.4in -4.5in to -0.2in

All ride-height measurements are relative to factory suspension height. Maximum adjustment limits are not recommended everyday driving settings. Actual lowering depends on vehicle condition, suspension travel, equipment, and wheel and tire clearance.

EDFC Compatibility & Installation Notes

This FLEX Z kit is compatible with TEIN's optional Electronic Damping Force Controller (EDFC) system when paired with the specified separately purchased components.

  • EDFC Motor Kit: EDK05-12140

  • EDFC Front Extension Kit: EDK06-K4474

  • Rear Motor Orientation: The rear EDFC motor must be installed parallel to the engine-side cover, according to TEIN's fitting instructions.

  • Radiator Reservoir Hose: The left radiator reservoir hose must be relocated to provide clearance during EDFC installation.

  • Front Camber Adjustment: Camber-adjustable upper mounts provide additional front alignment adjustment.

  • Rear Upper Mounts: Reinforced rubber mounting design.

  • Ride Height: Full-length adjustable at both ends; follow TEIN's specified damper-length and spring-preload procedures.

  • Installation: Professional suspension installation and a complete four-wheel alignment are recommended after fitting or adjusting the coilovers.

EDFC motors, controllers, and extension components are optional accessories and are not included with the standard FLEX Z kit. The rear motor positioning and hose relocation requirements apply to the optional electronic damping installation.

For second-generation MR2 owners who want adjustable lowering, damping control, and front camber adjustment, TEIN FLEX Z provides a vehicle-specific suspension setup for both listed 2.0L and 2.2L configurations.
