1. WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF A CAR AIR FILTER?
Usually, there are two air filters in a car. Both are for the interior and the engine, respectively. Both air filters are equally crucial for the vehicle to function at its best. For this reason, keeping a close eye on them is critical.
The filter screens are paper, cotton, or foam as breathable material. First, they must keep sand, dust, pollutants, and even mold from getting into your car's engine system.
●Engine filters: The air quality entering the engine positively impacts its performance. The cylinder walls and pistons of the motor will sustain damage if the screens are not present in the system. Call an engine repair service if something goes wrong.
●Cabin filters: High-quality cabin air filters assist in removing harmful emissions from the vehicle, safeguarding the driver's health. The importance of cabin air filters in cars is underscored by the fact that air pollution significantly contributes to cardiovascular and respiratory disease.
Studies carried out over the past two decades show that drivers and passengers of cars are significantly more exposed to harmful air pollutants, such as respiratory irritants, neurological agents, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, and carcinogens, than are cyclists, pedestrians, and users of public transportation.
2. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE THE AIR FILTER OF YOUR CAR?
A dirty filter allows allergens, harmful particles, dust, sand, and other material into the engine and vehicle. They may eventually cause health problems and motor damage. For this reason, you should swap out your air filters as needed. Several factors determine how frequently you should change (or wash) your car's air filters.
The longevity of your filters is influenced by your driving habits, the distance you travel, and the features of your car. Along with mileage, we'll provide some advice on how to tell when the filter needs to be changed. The frequency of your driving determines how often you should change the air filter in your car. In general, it needs to be changed every 30,000 miles.
Over time, the fragile material may rip, allowing debris inside. However, regardless of mileage, you ought to replace the screen every three years.
●Model of Your Car
Regarding filter maintenance, each manufacturer may have a different suggestion. Consult the manual for your car. For instance, every 45,000 miles, Chevrolet advises filter maintenance. On the other hand, Ford suggests replacing one after 30,000 kilometers (4).
●Conditions for Driving
The frequency of filter changes will increase due to a few factors. When traveling on unpaved roads, in hot weather, or congested areas, Hyundai advises changing it every 15,000 miles. This includes driving in an area that is heavily polluted.
3. WHEN SHOULD WE REPLACE THE ENGINE AIR FILTER?
By being aware of some warning signs, you may avoid waiting too long to replace a filthy or clogged filter. Here are five warning signs indicating the need for a new air filter.
●Your air filter appears to be dirty.
You can perform a visual inspection if you know your air filter (see your owner's manual to learn where to look). Your air filter should be white or off-white if it's in good condition.
●Your Car Appears to Be Losing Power
A clean air filter will improve the performance of your engine; it can increase acceleration by up to 11% in newer cars and up to 14% in older automobiles.
●Your Check Engine Light Illuminates.
Your check engine light could turn on for various reasons, from something as simple as a loose gas cap to something more serious. One of these can be that the engine isn't getting enough air, leading to carbon deposits in the engine and the dashboard light.
When you start your car, black smoke or flames may shoot out of your exhaust, which is one sure sign that the air filter needs to be replaced. The exhaust pipe's end may also make a popping noise or catch fire.
4. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER IN A CAR?
The price of a new air filter varies on the car's model and the store where you buy it. You may perform the task independently because changing the air filter is straightforward. A typical air filter can be purchased for between $10 and $25. You must be prepared to spend between $45 and $80 if you want a reusable air filter.
You'll need to purchase a cleaning kit after using it for a year. The cleaning kit, fortunately, is reasonably priced and versatile. A mechanic will probably charge you if you ask them to change your air filter. For labor, the price ranges from $20 to $30.
You can always DIY to save additional money, although certain shops may charge more or less for labour depending on where you live. Your choice of the air filter will affect both the price and how you will replace other filters in the future. We'll discuss what else to look for in an air filter, how much the manufacturer truly influences the price, and how to determine when you need a replacement.
